Principle#3 of TL for Degrowth

We promote learning well-being and ecological health over commodification of learning and labor competition

Table of contents

Transformative learning for degrowth calls for a shift in both formal and non-formal learning, moving away from models that prioritize individual economic productivity and job-seeking toward approaches that support holistic, fulfilling lifestyles harmonizing with nature. In formal schooling, this means rethinking the learning ecosystem (including the curriculum, the relationships between the learner and teacher, and the school building environments) to emphasize life skills, collaboration over competition, emotional intelligence, challenging “expert” knowledge, and ecological literacy over preparing students solely for competitive markets. In non-formal learning settings that focus on personal development and economic empowerment, we encourage a focus on collaboration, opportunities for decommodifying life, and sustainable living, offering alternatives that promote well-being, care, and community engagement rather than fueling endless economic growth and competition.

Transformative Learning is the river that nourishes the land, its flow ensuring the vitality of every field, forest, and community it touches.
