Principle#4

We embrace the discomfort of questioning our beliefs over the ease of staying in unchallenged, comfortable thinking and accept that there are multiple ways of seeing and being

Table of contents

Transformative learning for degrowth confronts the tension between our existing beliefs about consumption, growth, and sustainability. Even a temporary discomfort can spark a shift in our values and attitudes, ultimately leading to new behaviors and practices aligned with degrowth. Such discomfort might arise from reading an insightful book, watching a thought-provoking movie, or engaging in a challenging conversation. It can also emerge from stepping out of our comfort zones during collective formal or non-formal educational experiences, where diverse perspectives and critical reflections are encouraged. Additionally, it may result from witnessing or experiencing an injustice that challenges the way we see, think about, and live in our realities, mobilising us to reassess our roles and responsibilities in socio-ecological transformations that give emphasis on justice and well-being for all.

Transformative Learning is the storm that shakes the branches of an old tree, dislodging dry leaves and revealing hidden nests.
